Review: Beach House, M’phey Bei, Koh Rong Sanloem

This quirky beachside wooden house only has three rooms, offering a truly personalized experience.

Located right on the beach facing M’phey Bei Bay, British-owned Beach House (also sometimes called Dancing House) has a unique architectural design that sets it apart from other accommodation on the island. Beach House has just three rooms, two with two double beds that can sleep a total of four people, one with a double and a single bed that can sleep three, and a double room for two. Prices range from $40 to $60 per night, but can go as high as $120 on some booking sites.

Beach House Koh Rong Sanloem

Quirky Beach House in M’phey Bei has just three rooms, so you can rent the entire place if you’d like.

Although we had the chance to check out the bedrooms at Beach House, we promised to not post photos because they were occupied at the time. The interiors were very similar to those of the average wooden bungalow you’ll find elsewhere, although newer and with slightly cooler design. The real improvement over rooms elsewhere we found in the bathrooms, which were newly renovated with tile walls and floors and an actual proper sink and shower — something we didn’t see elsewhere in M’phey Bei.

Each of the bedrooms has a hinged wooden wall that opens up onto its own private balcony — it can be left open at night if you fancy the sound of the sea lulling you to sleep (and roosters waking you up in the morning). One of the rooms faces the beach and the other faces the village. The village-facing room has a loft with another double bed upstairs. Although the rooms are more interesting than any other accommodation in the village, they are still quite spare and we’re skeptical that they’re really worth twice the price of the nicer bungalows available elsewhere in M’phey Bei. That said, they’re usually full up, so evidently the general public doesn’t agree.

Next door are two other houses, known as Star House and Garden House, owned by the same people with a similar vibe and prices. Star House has two double beds and private balcony, and Garden House has a double room with balcony. It’s a bit confusing, but we promise to investigate more thoroughly on our next visit!

We were quoted the following prices at Beach House, Koh Rong Sanloem:

  • Double wooden room: Up to $60 in high season, $40 in low season
