Review: Sok San Beach Resort, Koh Rong

This upscale resort offers some of the most luxurious Koh Rong accommodation on the white sands of Sok San Beach.

Formerly Sok San Base Camp, Sok San Beach Resort was where the Survivor television show was based when they first filmed on Koh Rong. But don’t worry, it won’t be hard to survive here, because the resort boasts one of the island’s most upscale accommodation options.

Sok San Resort Koh Rong

Kick back and order a cocktail, it’s time to relax on the beach.

Sok San Beach Resort is situated perfectly on the northern end of Sok San Beach, which is a 7.5 km-long stretch of picture-perfect white sand, fringed with palm trees and looking out onto an aquamarine sea that, on nice days, is so lovely it seems almost impossible that it’s real.

The chalets are a much improved version of the typical wooden bungalow. Each has two rooms, a bedroom and a sitting room, and comes equipped with air-conditioning and hot water. The family chalet has two bedrooms, one with a king-sized bed and the other with two twin beds. If you haven’t visited most of the other accommodation on the island, as we have, you might not know to be impressed with small details such as flat-screen television screens to connect to your laptop, wardrobes, writing desks, and wrap-around private balconies, but these features are most definitely not standard on Koh Rong!

Bedroom in one of Sok San Resort’s chalets — note the air-conditioning unit!

The Pavilion is a sea-side apartment building with three different modern rooms types. The loft has a bedroom with king-size bed, an adjoining lounging room with mini-kitchen, and tiled bathroom.

The Pavilion garden-view and sea-view rooms are the simplest offerings at Sok San Beach Resort, but still very nice — the sea-view room is directly on the beach and both have private balconies. Be warned, though, that these modern rooms are quite small (but that only makes the air conditioning more effective).

Sealed Pavilion rooms are air-conditioned for when you want a retreat from the beach.

The nine-room seaside villa can sleep six adults, plus children. If you’re looking for beachside luxury, this is it. All the resort’s rooms are air-conditioned and have hot water and 24-hour electricity.

This is, without question, the nicest place to stay on Sok San Beach (aka Koh Rong’s Long Beach). There is nothing there that comes close to this standard, with air-conditioning and high-level service. That said, we found the vibe at the place a bit strange; it felt a bit like a resort factory with people crowded around the reception desk checking in and out and staff giving people a group introduction to the place. That may have been just the day we visited, though.

The beach directly out front of Sok San Beach Resort. This is paradise!

How to get there: Angkor Chom Bungalows can be reached by the Buva Sea ferry, which has daily speed ferries to Sok San Beach. The trip takes 45-60 minutes and leaves at 1 p.m. from Sihanoukville and goes back at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for a return ticket transportation page for more information.
