One of the nicer places to stay in the Koh Toch area, these new bungalows are a cut above the rest.
Set on the white sand beach at the far end of Koh Toch, White Beach Bungalows is the last accommodation before you round the corner to Treehouse Bungalows and 4km Beach. Although offerings on Koh Toch are invariably quite similar, White Beach Bungalows has some of the nicest bungalows. The differences are minimal, but small touches, like wooden beaded curtains and artistic woodwork flourishes, make White Beach’s simple wooden bungalows slightly more interesting.
In addition, their wooden bungalows are more sealed than the usual, which means that they are not as prone to mosquitoes as bungalows that are open at the top. On the flip side, the lack of open space means they are more likely to trap the heat. The bungalows have 24-hour electricity and are fan-cooled, and the glass windows on either side can be opened to let in a breeze. The beds at White Beach Bungalows all have mosquito nets and each room has a safety box, although they recommend you keep valuables at the front desk. Each bungalow also has a private porch with lounging chairs, a table, and a hammock.
White Beach Bungalows offers free WiFi to guests, but it’s only available in the restaurant. which serves all of the standard Western and Cambodian dishes.
The sand directly in front of White Beach Bungalows is, as advertised, white. They’ve got a swing set for kids but it’s the beach itself that is the most impressive playground. Because White Beach is furthest away from Koh Toch Village, it’s mercifully quiet and serene, with just the sound of the waves to keep you up at night.
Although we liked the look of White Beach Bungalows, we didn’t get to stay there. We made a reservation on Booking.com and paid for it in advance, but a day before we were to arrive the management emailed us to tell us that if we didn’t book a ticket with their preferred ferry vendor and show them the receipt, our reservation would not be honored. This is the dark side of the ferry war on Koh Rong — big commissions on ferry tickets mean that some guesthouses will push their guests to buy from them. This is the first time we have seen a guesthouse owner actually refuse to honor a pre-paid reservation over ferry tickets, though, and we can’t say we were impressed.
We were quoted the following prices at White Beach Bungalows:
- Fan bungalow with one double bed: $55 in high season, $35 in low season
- Fan bungalow, two double beds: $70 in high season, $50 in low season
We were able to find lower rates for last-minute reservations at Booking.com, so it’s worth checking prices online before you book.
