Set a little way back from the beach, the up-and-coming Otres Village is home to the only free dorm in Sihanoukville*. Even with the world renowned Otres Market drawing in big crowds every Saturday, and an ever expanding array of new bars, restaurants, and activities, Otres Village still retains a relaxed riverside atmosphere. Plus, with the beach just five minutes away, you will never feel like you’re missing out.

Wish You Were Here

A stone’s throw from the beach, the positive, friendly atmosphere, fresh juices and delicious nightly specials make this quirky all-wood hostel is the perfect place to get away from it all. With the friendliest staff around, a giant fish tank and an eclectic selection of board games, Wish You Were Here has the homiest vibes on Otres, and the $4 dorm beds and 50-cent happy hour beers definitely hit the right spot!

One of Wish You Were Here’s best features is an upstairs chill-out space with hanging chairs and a sea-view balcony, perfect for reading or relaxing. The dorm and upstairs rooms can get a little noisy on party nights and with live music at their Sunday Sessions, but the spectacular sunset views, fast WiFi,and great location make it hard to complain.

Well worth $4, Wish’s dorm is simple and spacious, with comfy mattresses on the floor and mosquito nets to protect against bugs and give an illusion of privacy. Fresh towels, linen, and blankets are provided for all guests, and there are private lock boxes to keep valuables safely stowed away. The downstairs bathrooms are clean, with tiled walls and floors and high-pressure, cold-water showers.

Wish You Were Here also offers budget-friendly single and double rooms above the bar and lush garden bungalows, all with shared bathrooms. SeaGarden

The only hostel on Otres 1 to be located right on the beach, SeaGarden is a true one-stop-shop for those looking for an affordable beach break. As famous for its good food, cheap drinks, a vibrant atmosphere and sociable crowd as it is for its attention to detail and cleanliness, SeaGarden offers high-end backpackers’ accommodation with a low-end price tag.

One of the few hostels right on the beach, SeaGarden is as close to flashpacking as you’ll get on Otres.

Only a few steps away from the ocean, SeaGarden’s comfortable dorms are probably as close to flashpacking as you can get here Otres, with real beds, private mosquito nets, fans and lock boxes for your security. Towels are provided for a $5 deposit and the bathrooms are some of the cleanest you’ll find on the beach, with tiled walls, mirrors and high-pressure showers.

With prices ranging from just $4-5 a night (depending on the season), these clean and comfy dorms definitely offer good value for money in an unbeatable location. If you’re feeling flush, we recommend splashing out on a private wooden bungalow (shared bathroom) and taking in the sun from your own private porch that opens onto the sand. Prices in rainy season start at $6 (non-sea view) and $8 (sea-view), and going up to $15 and $20 in high season.

Done Right

An eco-haven in the heart of Otres Beach, Done Right has an almost Mediterranean feel, with funky igloo-esque geodomes, lush gardens, and great food. Choose from basic dorm beds to budget-friendly singles, twins and doubles upstairs to en-suite doubles and truly unique geodesic bungalows in the garden. Offering the cheapest dorms on Otres 1 at just $3/night, you certainly get what you pay for, especially with the shared bathrooms, but with fresh towels on check-in, amazing staff and great amenities, it’s perfect for backpackers on a budget.

A true Otres tradition, Done Right‘s Sunday Family Dinner has become a staple part of the local calendar. Every week, locals and tourists gather to dig into an amazing home-cooked meal and share stories, whilst being entertained by the best local talent around, featuring everything from live music to spoken word and Cambodian Apsara dancers.

Cheap dorm Otres

It’s the cheapest dorm on Otres at just $3 a night…but you get what you pay for (we prefer the geodomes).

Done Right’s chilled out atmosphere, comfy hammocks and movie lounge make it the ideal port of call for laid-back eco-travelers looking to unwind and make new friends. Although the cheaper accommodation is quite basic, the quirkiness of the bar, in-house travel agency and wonderful staff more than make up for it, and with beds starting at $3, it’s certainly a great place to set up camp while you take in all the highlights of the local area.

Mushroom Point

All the hostels on Otres are famous for their own unique charms, but Mushroom Point goes above and beyond. As soon as you step foot inside their giant mushrooms, you will feel as though you have been transported into a weird and wonderful dreamworld. Spread across two locations, Mushroom Point is famous for its great staff and even better pizza, as well as its funky atmosphere and big round beds!

At $8/night, the Mushroom Point dorm is the most expensive on our list, but the big round mattresses can easily accommodate two people if you’re happy sharing. The dorm is comfortable, light and breezy, with princess mosquito nets, private fans and plenty of cute mushroom-themed decor, perfect for the traveler who values quality over quantity.

The majority of the accommodation is set back from the beach, with the open and airy dorm above the main restaurant and funky en-suite mushroom bungalows in the garden. There are also a handful of private mushroom bungalows available on the beach in high season. These straw bungalows have shared bathrooms and can be quite noisy, but if sea views are your thing then their location is pretty darn perfect!

The slightly higher price point of this unusual eco-lodge allows for a unique design and a greater attention to detail that perfectly complements the quirkiness of Otres beach. With two hangout options, the chilled out backstreet, or the buzzing beach bar, each traveler is guaranteed to find their own little pocket of paradise.

Otres 2

Footprints

Footprints is the only real backpackers’ on Otres 2, making it the perfect place to meet like-minded travelers and make the most of this end of the beautiful beach. About a 30-minute stroll from bustling Otres 1, Footprints’ beach vibes, authentic Italian pizza, and open air dorms definitely add to its charms. The dorm accommodation is simple, comfortable and very spacious, and the awesome free Netflix/Playstation lounge and boxing gym are a great addition to this funky hostel.

Able to accommodate upwards of 80 guests, Footprints definitely has something for everyone. In addition to the three dorms, there are also open-air beds, to sleep out under the stars on those warm nights, as well as a range of private shared/en-suite bungalows at different price points. Each bed has its own mosquito net, fan and private locker for valuables, with fresh linen and towels and clean shared bathrooms for guests.

The two restaurants and bar area provides ample seating and relaxation space, as well as a pool table and fun events such as live music and quiz nights in high season. A true one-stop-shop, Footprints also has its own in-house travel agency and offers private boat trips out to visit the local islands for fishing, snorkeling and cliff-jumping.

With plenty of space to chill, reasonably priced food and drinks, an unbeatable beachside location and more amenities than any other backpackers on this list, Footprints has a lot to offer the budget traveler. The only downside could be that it is a little further away from the more happening Otres 1 and Otres Village.

Otres Village

Hacienda

The original and the best backpackers hostel in Otres Village, Hacienda is home to the only free dorm* in Sihanoukville. For the price, the beds, mosquito nets, fans, lockers and hang out area are more than enough for the thrifty traveler. A legendary haven in the village, Hacienda is as famous for its cheap eats, great bar conversation and late nights as it is for its ice-cold Jager!

Hacienda’s relaxing riverside location, opposite Otres Market, and the Syn Absinthe Distillery, makes it the perfect place to escape the sand and the crowds of the beach. The lush gardens more than make up for the absence of a sea view and the beach is only a 10-minute walk or a 5-minute tuk-tuk/moto ride away.

While the free dorm is perfect for backpackers on an absolute budget, if comfort and space are more up your alley, then the paid dorm is well worth $3 a night. Alternatively, splash out on a private room. Hacienda’s comfortable shared-bathroom bungalows ooze rustic charm and the lakeside en-suites have some of the best views in the village!

The friendly vibes, expansive movie and TV show collection, hearty home-cooked food and loveable animals make Hacienda a very difficult place to leave! Whether you come for a holiday or are just passing through, it’s very easy to end up staying for months on end, and, when the price is right who could blame you?!
