Saravoan Royal Palace is an excellent mid-range find in the heart of Phnom Penh. (Superior room)

The rooms are stylish and modern, with exposed brick accent walls, curtains made of local silk, and black and white photos of Cambodia from the French colonial era. On different visits we stayed in a superior room and a suite room. Both were very pleasant, but the suite was much, much bigger, with an additional seating area and a balcony. If you’re looking to treat yourself, consider upgrading to a suite. There’s no elevator, so if you abhor stairs stick to a ground floor room, although they aren’t as bright.

Saravoan Royal Palace used to be one of the Frangipani chain of Phnom Penh hotels. Since being taken over by new owners they’ve spruced the place up, but kept some of the nice original features, including the furniture made from woven palm. The rooms downstairs are a bit darker, so we preferred a few sets of stairs to get a brighter room. Each room is air-conditioned, with a mini-bar, electronic safe, and flat-screen television with cable channels (including a selection in English and French).

The dining and lounge area downstairs has a cute bar with colorful accents of reclaimed wood, tropical plants, and a nearby reflecting pool. All bookings include breakfast, which includes a pretty standard offering of American, Continental, or Khmer breakfast. Unlike most other places in town, the Western choices are mysteriously better than the Asian ones.

The suite rooms are much larger, this photo shows about half the room.

One of the things we like most about Saravoan Royal Palace Hotel are the friendly staff, who go out of their way to be helpful and make the place welcoming. After trying the place out once, it’s now one of our favorite Phnom Penh hotels.

Room prices start at $40 for superior rooms and $45 for suites, and are $5 to $10 more in busy season. Bookings are available online, and the prices can be slightly more or less expensive on the different sites, so it’s worth checking both. Most recently, Agoda offered better deals.
