Review: Leng Meng Beach Bungalows, Koh Rong Sanloem

With a beautiful beachfront location, Leng Meng’s bungalows are well appointed and nicer than most.

Leng Meng Beach Bungalows is located in the middle stretch of Saracen Bay, directly on the white sand beach, with beautiful sea views. It’s a collection of 14 wooden bungalows that are a cut above similar-looking offerings nearby.

The excellent beach-side location means easy access to the sands of Saracen Bay.

The bungalows are built to a high standard, with added features that we liked, such as walls that ended a foot before the roof to let air and light in, but protected by bamboo bars and screens to keep mosquitoes out; wooden bedside tables; bamboo bars on the windows; a large mirror and bamboo coat hook on the wall; and a thatch roof that had clearly been recently replaced, despite the fact that Leng Meng has been in business for several years. (Many bungalows don’t bother, and the old thatch can drop debris on the beds.)

All of Leng Meng’s bungalows are right on the beach, with sea views. Each has a private bathroom and one or two double beds, fitted with mosquito nets and an electric fan to keep guests cool. They have electricity only from 6 p.m. until midnight, so you won’t be able to run the fan all night, but the bungalows are designed for air circulation (that’s where the bars on the windows come in handy; you can keep the windows open all night) and you can wake up with a cool-water shower. Rattan mats are used like wallpaper, which adds a nice look compared to the bare wooden walls you’ll find elsewhere. Each bungalow has a private balcony with seating, and a spray hose to wash the sand off your feet before heading inside.

Inside a Leng Meng bungalow. What’s outside is even better.

The restaurant serves a range of Cambodian and European food, including locally caught seafood at reasonable prices – we were impressed with what we tried. The restaurant, which is slightly elevated, with a tile floor, is a hangout for local islanders who are happy to share a beer with visitors (although you might end up paying for it!). Unfortunately, Leng Meng does not offer WiFi. You can either use your visit as an opportunity to unplug, or pick up a connection at one of the neighboring restaurants.

This was a rainy day — imagine how beautiful it is on a sunny day!

Leng Meng’s location is excellent, it looks out onto the calm waters of Saracen Bay, with a volleyball net outside, several swings, and a table and chairs on the sand. Overall, although we think their low season prices are a bit on the high side, their bungalows are well appointed and definitely nicer than most accommodation with this style of bungalow.

We were quoted the following prices at Leng Meng Beach Bungalows, Koh Rong Sanloem:

  • En suite bungalow with double bed: $50 in high season, $40 in low season
  • En suite bungalow with two double beds: $60 in high season, $45 in low season

The walk-in prices we were quoted are lower than what they advertise on their website ($50/$60/$70). Prices are lower still (sometimes) on Booking.com and Agoda. When we checked rates they were $35/$45 in low season, but $70/$80 in high season.
