Review: Smile Bungalows and Resort, Koh Rong

Smile’s classic bungalows on Koh Rong’s white sand beach are simple but ideally located.

A few minutes down the beach from Koh Toch Village, Smile Bungalows and Resort offers a selection of classic bungalows facing Koh Rong’s white sand beach. The older bungalows are wood and thatch, and slightly less expensive, while the new bungalows are wooden with sliding glass doors. The newer bungalows are the “resort” but that’s a stretch.

All of the bungalows are fan-cooled, with room-temperature showers (rarely a problem in Cambodia, where room temperature is quite warm). Bungalows have private bathrooms and each has two double beds and can sleep four people. Although the bungalows are not small, the beds are quite close together, so you’ll want to be friends with your bunkmates.

Smile offers guests 24-hour electricity with power outlets in the rooms. Beds have mosquito nets — and trust us, you will need them. One of the nice features of the Smile bungalows is a large attached porch with a table and chairs. Most of the bungalows in Koh Rong are decidedly for sleeping only, so having a nice balcony or porch to hang out on when you’re not at the beach is a pleasant distraction.

They’ve also got a few hammocks set up, and the beach in front of Smile is perfect for sunbathing. Because it’s a five-minute walk from Koh Toch Village, Smile is far enough away so the incessant partying in the vicinity of the piers won’t disturb guests who want to enjoy some island serenity.

Rooms sometimes come with free breakfast, often as part of a price negotiation or if bookings are made online. Smile has a large outside seating area and restaurant on the beach, where they serve a selection of grilled seafood as well as Western and Cambodian cuisine. The fun-loving staff at Smile can usually be found playing some tunes — loudly — at the restaurant, and there are happy-hour drink offers on cocktails and beer.
