Cambodia Gay Pride 2017

With a Cambodia-style ten-day week, Cambodia Gay Pride week is already in full swing for 2017, running from May 12th to 22nd. The theme this year is ‘I am what I am.’  The subtext of the theme is recycling, because it’s the same theme as the last two (three?) years, when it was chosen to convey “that you’re born to be what you are.”

The 2017 10-day event will celebrate the LGBT community, increase local acceptance, and raise awareness of LGBT issues in Cambodia. Of course all of the Phnom Penh gay bars will be having their own special celebrations, and there have been a few days of pre-game events, but here are some of the highlights, starting from today:

Blue Chilli cabaret show. The Cambodia LGBT community goes all out for pride week+ in Phnom Penh.

Friday, May 19th

4 p.m. onwards
Cambodia Pride Film Festival at Meta House: China special short films: Papa Weifeng (2016); Pink Dads (2016); Kill the Gay (2016); Kaspar X–If I Had a Soul (2015).
7 p.m.
Die Beautiful (Philippines, 2016) explores the life and death of a transgender Filipino.

6 p.m.
Q Magazine launch party and Influence Exhibition: A night full of rainbow, glitter and queerness to celebrate Cambodia Pride and the launch of the 10th Q Magazine. Exhibition highlights members of the LGBTI+ community who have made an impact on what it means to be queer in Cambodia.

9 p.m. until late
Pride party at Blue Chilli. Head over to Blue Chilli where they’ll be having a “sexy muscle boy show” as well as a Cambodian drag, diva, and dancers performance, plus free condoms and HIV testing. This event is consistently excellent, taking over Street 178 in front of Blue Chilli and this year is sure to be just as good.

White Party at Valentino’s Club and Bistro to celebrate Cambodian Pride. Everyone who comes dressed in white gets a free shot. This one promises to go late.

Saturday, May 20th

11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Gay pride brunch. Feel Good 2 is doing a special gay pride brunch with a gorgeous set menu for only $15. Bloody marys and mimosas will also be on offer and $1 from each drink sale will be donated to CCT for HIV outreach in Battambang. You must make a reservation in advance, as seating is limited. 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The amazingly fabulous pride tuk tuk race. Join this tuk tuk race around Phnom Penh which will be visiting various LGBT venues and organizations. This year promises to be bigger, better, and more fabulous than last year! Email for more details and to sign up for a team.

Cambodia Pride Film Festival at Meta House:
4 p.m. Spa Night (USA, 2016) forbidden sexual awakening set in LA’s Koreatown.
7 p.m. Cambodian documentaries: No Matter Who We Are (Cambodia, 2013); Two Girls Against the Rain (Cambodia, 2011); Daughter and the Palmae Blossom (Cambodia, 2012)
8 p.m.  Cambodian LGBTi activist Sou Sotheavy tells an incredible story of empowerment in Somewhere Under the Rainbow.

5:30 p.m.
BBQ and Pool Party at Vapor Restaurant at Manor House. Meet Vapor’s friendly staff and enjoy the laid-back vibe for this early evening pool party and barbecue.

8 p.m.
Party at AV Bar 225. AV Bar 225 hosts a pride party featuring drinking, divas, and drag. Party starts at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 10 p.m.

10 p.m.
Party at Generations Bar. Join the pride party at one of Phnom Penh’s newest gay bars, and they’re all decked out with lights, a sound system, and even a glowing bar.

Midnight until late
Heart of Darkness pride party. Heart of Darkness, Phnom Penh’s preeminent gay club, hosts a pride night bash. Last year they featured a “bare-chested beauties” show, drag acts from Blue Chilli. $5 cover charge includes one free drink.

Sunday, May 21st

3 p.m.
Pool Party. Rambutan Resort and Arthur&Paul join forces again to host a pride closing party that will feature drinking, swimming, and sauna.

Cambodia Pride Film Festival at Meta House: 4 p.m. Moonlight (USA, 2016)
7 p.m. Australia special featuring eight short films.
8:30 p.m. Front Cover Gay fashion stylist embarks on journey of self-discovery (USA, 2015).

9 p.m.
Pride of Phnom Penh street party. PoPP has added an extra bar and are spilling out into the street with their yearly Cambodia pride party. Free food, lots of enthusiasm, and a diverse crowd make this an excellent choice to wind down pride week.

Sunday, May 22nd

6 p.m.
True Color at The L Bar. The final party of Cambodia Pride 2017 is at the L Bar, Cambodia’s only lesbian bar. Happy hour at 6 p.m., spoken word with Kosal Khiev at 7 p.m. and live music after that.
