Why Otres Village is Sihanoukville’s new foodie hotspot

Once a peaceful river retreat between rice paddies, Sihanoukville’s Otres Village has quickly evolved into one of Cambodia’s coolest and most vibrant destinations. A short walk from Otres Beach, the village is home to locals, expats and tourists alike, offering a wide array of quirky and comfortable accommodation options and a myriad of cafes, restaurants, bars, and teahouses featuring dishes from all across the world. From Japanese to Czech, Lebanese to Indian, and American diner to traditional British fish and chips, Otres Village has become a true foodie’s paradise. Here’s our rundown of the best of the best!

Otres Sihanoukville beach

Where to eat on Otres.

Jin

Consistently voted one of the best restaurants in Sihanoukville on TripAdvisor, Jin’s beautiful garden restaurant is well worth a visit. Situated on the main road through Otres Village, Jin is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and offers a variety of Italian pasta, pizza, and gnocchi, along with amazing homemade burgers, and delicious appetizers.

Run by a friendly and welcoming Italian brother and sister duo, Jin offers traditional Cambodian bungalows dotted amongst the lush garden and a cozy bar and restaurant set up where you can enjoy a lazy afternoon sipping a coffee, a laid-back dinner with friends, or a romantic evening for two. Their extensive menu features plenty of vegan and veggie options, freshly squeezed juices and a good selection of coffees, wine, and beers. We highly recommend their delicious goaty burger with homemade porcini cream, cheddar and goats cheese, and the homemade ravioli.

Food on Otres

Piadina with cream cheese and roasted vegetables at Amareina.

Amareina

Branching off from Otres 1’s famous Papa Pippo’s Italian restaurant, Amareina is on the back road from the beach towards the village. Their new incarnation is a stylish upgrade from bamboo beach bar chic, with a beautifully modern bar and restaurant, a terrace with sunset views of the ocean, a swimming pool, and high-quality accommodation.

Swing by for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and tuck into everything from homemade pizzas and pasta to piadinas (Italian-style flat breads), tapas, soups, stews, and seafood. Those with a sweet tooth won’t be able to resist their delicious cheesecakes, tiramisu or the specialty chocolate Nutella bomb. They also have a well-stocked bar featuring what is arguably the best wine selection in all of Otres village, Italian coffees, plenty of delicious cocktails, and several different beers.

The Frying Yorkshireman

Sometimes you just need a taste of home, and nowhere does British comfort food or Sunday roasts better than Owen at The Frying Yorkshireman. Choose from fish, salt and pepper calamari, scampi, and battered sausages cooked to perfection in his signature batter, with hand cut chips and sides including chip shop style gravy, curry sauce, mushy peas, tartare sauce, and bread and butter. Top it all off with proper malt vinegar, Heinz ketchup, and an ice cold pint of Carlsberg.

Every Sunday The Frying Yorkshireman also serves up what is arguably the best roast dinner in all of Cambodia, with amazing Yorkshire puddings and all the trimmings, and veggie options are also available. Food is served from 3 p.m., and we recommend getting down there early. The Frying Yorkshireman is easy to find along the main road in Otres Village but those who don’t feel like venturing too far can also call or send a Facebook message and have their newspaper-wrapped fish and chips delivered directly to their door.

Kio Otres Sihanoukville

Try the crack bao with pork crackling at Kio Izakaya.

Kio Izakaya

Having just reopened in a new location in the heart of Otres Village, Kio is the go-to spot in Sihanoukville for East Asian tapas and fusion cuisine. Their varied menu pairs locally sourced flavors with imported ingredients, such as baos with five spice pork, pork crackling, Japanese chicken kaarage, or tempura mushroom with homemade pickles and sauces, Japanese style gyoza, and specials such as tamarind barracuda ceviche, Kampot pepper and lime mackerel sashimi, and Filipino Chicken Adobo.

Their new upgraded restaurant features plenty of seating, a pool table, and a fully stocked bar. It’s the perfect place to come for tapas and light bites, group meals or special occasions, and well worth swinging by one of their tasting menu or party nights where they often offer a unique dining experience such as a famous Filipino style boodle fight.

Follow them on Facebook for event updates as reservations are normally required.

Rillo’s American Kitchen @ The Village Idiot

If it’s American food you crave, then Rillo’s American Kitchen is the spot for you! Offering everything from chili cheese fries and bacon ranch burgers to Philly cheese steak and grilled cheese, along with plenty of veggie and vegan options, Rillo’s at the Village Idiot is open from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. most nights of the week, and even later on special occasions.

Using specially sourced ingredients and recipes passed down from generation to generation, Rillo’s brings classic Americana to Otres Village. Their super central location in the village’s only dedicated sports bar, The Village Idiot, is the perfect accompaniment to the food, with a great atmosphere and regular events from the Superbowl and soccer Super Sundays and even ‘Ladies Night’ dress-up parties. You can also order from Tuk Out, Sihanoukville’s new dedicated food delivery service.

Brunch & Beyond @ Bob’s Bar

If brunch is your favorite meal of the day then you are in luck! Kicking off at 8 a.m. for those early starters, and running until 3 p.m. every day, Brunch & Beyond has a variety of options to suit everyone’s breakfast needs, including homemade quiches, buttermilk biscuits and gravy, freshly baked bagels with a variety of toppings, and freshly ground coffee. Located in Bob’s blue Bar in the middle of the village, right next to the turn-off to Hacienda and Otres Market, Brunch & Beyond is difficult to miss. A favorite among locals and visitors alike, Brunch & Beyond is the perfect place to soothe that hangover and get your day started right.

Otres Market

Last but by no means least, and arguably the most famous event in Otres, Otres Market is the place to go every Saturday night. Featuring a range of food and craft stalls, along with live music, Otres Market offers a wide array of tastes and flavors from around the world. Whilst it is only on once a week, the night market is a foodie’s paradise, with plenty of different food stalls offering everything from local Cambodian cuisine to Japanese, Indian, Russian, Portuguese, Turkish, and Mexican. There are also plenty of pop up stalls offering delicious cakes and cookies, pies, sandwiches, pizzas, smoothies and salads. The stalls are open from sunset until just before midnight, but the music and DJs continue into the night,.

Otres Market is the perfect place to round up our rundown of the best food in Otres Village, and just one of the ultimate reasons that so many amazing chefs from around the world have decided to set up shop in this quirky and eccentric community.

In 2018 Sihanoukville was bad with constructions and duusty roads. Now in 2021, most constructions are finished and the roads are paved with black asphalt.. It is now beautiful.
